Traditional processions during Holy Week make Easter in Mallorca particularly memorable.

During Easter week, you will see throughout the Island processions of Catholic ‘penitentes’ dressed in the colourful robes and tall pointed hats (capirotes) of their particular fraternity. In Palma there are processions every day, with holy images paraded through the streets. The most popular is the Santo Cristo de la Sangre procession that dates from 1154 and involves more than 30 different Catholic fraternities.

The Good Friday event in Pollença is probably the most atmospheric. Large crowds gather at the sides of the Calvari steps to watch the ‘penitentes’ in a torch-lit procession. It starts high above the town, in the company of Roman soldiers at the Calvari Chapel, and then descends down the 365 steps of the Calvari into town for a mock crucifixion. The procession starts about 9pm and you need to arrive early for a good view.

‘Pancaritats’ also take place across the Island, usually between Easter Sunday and the Tuesday after Easter. The literal meaning of ‘Pancaritat’ is bread charity and it is a Holy Week tradition dating back to 1407. Typically it involves most of the residents of a village making a short pilgrimage to a local chapel or holy place for a day-long picnic. The most famous is held at Bellver Castle overlooking Palma but many of the smaller villages hold their own Pancaritat. It is a chance for the men to show off their cooking skills. There is a real sense of community and celebration of village life from everyone taking part.

Holy Week 2024

28th of March to 1st April (Maundy Thursday to Easter Monday)
Holy Week (Semana Santa) is celebrated all over the Island with Easter services and processions. Dates can be found online closer to the time, some of the fraternities like the Cofradía de la Purísima Sangre de Cristo are even on Facebook.

Traditionelle Prozessionen machen Ostern auf Mallorca zu einem außergewöhnlichen Erlebnis.

In der Osterwoche finden inselweit Prozessionen der katholischen Kirche statt, zu denen Gläubige gemeinsam mit Bruderschaften in farbigen Büßergewändern und spitzen Hüten, den capirotes, durch die Straßen ziehen. In Palma finden täglich Umzüge mit Heiligenstatuen statt, denen Trommler folgen, die den Takt der Schritte vorgeben. Der sehenswerteste ist wohl der des Santo-Cristo-de-la-Sangre-Ordens, der bereits seit 1154 abgehalten wird, und über dreißig Bruderschaften zusammenbringt. Am Karfreitag ist die Prozession in Pollença wegen ihrer besonderen Atmosphäre zu empfehlen. Die Zuschauer versammeln sich an der Calvari-Treppe, die Büßer tragen Fackeln und werden begleitet von Männern in der Uniform römischer Soldaten. Die Prozession beginnt an der Calvari-Kirche und geht die 365 Stufen hinab in den Ort. Die Veranstaltung beginnt um 21 Uhr, es ist aber ratsam, etwas früher dort zu sein, um einen Platz mit guter Sicht zu finden.

„Pancaritats” wird seit 1407 zwischen Ostersonntag und dem Dienstag danach gefeiert. Die wörtliche Übersetzung von „Pancaritats” ist Brotspende. Üblicherweise wird nach dem Pilgergang von der Ortskirche zu einem Picknickplatz ein Essen im Freien zubereitet, bei dem die Männer ihre Kochkünste zeigen.

Heilige Woche 2024

28. März – 1. April (Gründonnerstag bis Ostermontag)
Die Heilige Woche (semana santa) wird auf der ganzen Insel mit Ostermessen und Prozessionen gefeiert. Die Termine stehen zeitnah online, Bruderschaften wie die Cofradía de la Purísima Sangre de Cristo sind auch auf Facebook zu finden.
